Colossians 3:16-17                                                            Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit

Kowloon International Baptist Church Kowloon Tong

Harry Lucenay, Pastor                                                                             18 June 2006

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:16, 17

1. Saturate your heart with God’s Word.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… Colossians 3:16

Thy word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.

Psalm 119:11 NASB

How can the word of Christ dwell in you? (insights from Psalm 119)

  • Ask God to reveal His heart to you through Scripture.

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

Psalm 119:18

Provide me with insight that comes only from your word.

Psalm 119:169 MSG

  • Read God’s Word.

How can a young person live a clean life? By carefully reading the map of your Word. Psalm 119:9 MSG

Teach me from your textbook of life. Psalm 119:124 MSG

  • Think about what you have read.

Thinking about your teaching gives me better understanding.

Psalm 119:99 NCV

I lie awake at night thinking of your promises.

Psalm 119:148 NCV

  • Act according to what God teaches you.

Because you have satisfied me, God, I promise to do everything you say.

Psalm 119:57 MSG

Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.

Psalm 119:133

As you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom…

Colossians 3:16

We are to help a people see what God is saying and act on what he sees.

2. Sing your hearts out.

And as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16

How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him! Psalm 147:1

Music must express the emotion of the heart, adoration and worship.

J.S. Bach: All music should have no other end and aim than the glory of God and the soul’s refreshment; where this is not remembered there is no real music but only a devilish hub-bub.

Music must be worthy of the Lord Jesus.

Sing to the Lord; bless his name. Each day proclaim the good news that he saves. Psalm 96:2

3. Show your commitment to Jesus.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:17

Everything is done in the recognition of the authority of Jesus’ name.

Everything is done with awareness that we are God’s people.

Listen to your words and look at your deeds. Are you right with Jesus?

When you are right with Jesus, gratitude forms your attitude.

Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us give a joyous shout to the rock of our salvation! Let us come before him with thanksgiving. Let us sing him psalms of praise. Psalm 95:1, 2
