Colossians 2:13-15                                                     Nail It Down

Kowloon International Baptist Church                        Kowloon Tong

Harry Lucenay, Pastor                                               9 April 2006

The Bible recognizes the fact that sin separates people from God. God specifically addressed the issue of sin in the cross of Jesus Christ. Today's passage uses picturesque language to help us understand what God did for us in the cross of Jesus Christ.

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle to them, triumphing over them by the cross.                                                         Colossians 2:13-15

One Problem.

When you were dead in your sins & in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature...v. 13

Life lived out of self-centeredness makes us unresponsive to God and alien to the life God wants us to experience. When we live as if God does not matter, we miss God's best in our lives.

We're all like sheep who've wandered off and gotten lost. We've all done our own thing, gone our own way.
 Isaiah 53:6 The Message

Four Pictures.

He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; and having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle to them, triumphing over them by the cross.vv. 13-15

Written code: Each of us creates his/her autobiography. Our wrongdoing puts us in debt to God in a way that we cannot reconcile on our own.

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.           Revelation 20:12

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.                                                  Romans 3:23

Having canceled the written code: God offers to cancel the debts that stand between each of us and the Holy God

He took it away, nailing it to the cross: God used the cross to show us the awful nature of our sin and depth of His love for us.

He himself bore out sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins.               1 Peter 2:24

And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle to them, triumphing over them by the cross. Through the cross Jesus Christ erased our sin and defeated the powers of evil.

Two Stories

False charges set up illegal trials which condemned Jesus to the cross.

They nailed Jesus to a cross.                                                                 Mark 15:25 Contemporary English Version

God allowed all the sin to be addressed on the cross of Jesus Christ.

His words from the cross reveal something of the spiritual journey he took for us. Father, forgive them for they know not what they do...My God, my God, why have you forsaken me...It is finished...

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.           2 Corinthians 5:21

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.           Romans 8:1

The first story shows us God's love, forgiveness, and provision. The second story is yours. What will you do with what Jesus has done?

The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.     Romans 6:23

In God's mysterious plan, He allows you to receive His forgiveness & enter a relationship with Him as you turn from your sin & trust Him as your Master.

Change your life. Turn to God and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, so your sins are forgiven.           Acts 2:38 The Message

The New International Version is used unless otherwise noted.
